About The Course
With open fairways, small bunkers and tight greens it’s a course for the life list, promising memories that evoke golf’s grand golden age.
Built in 1913 and renovated by renowned course architects Tom Doak and Bruce Matthews, this USGA-rated manicured bluegrass course presents nine challenging holes. Complete with driving range and putting green, the course spans a beautiful peninsula surrounded by the breathtaking Grand Traverse Bay.
This historic course has hosted several U.S. presidents, titans of industry and other distinguished visitors. Among the notables who played the course is famed golf master Walter Hagen, who lived in the region following his retirement from professional play. Peggy Kirk Bell, named the PGA's First Lady of Golf in 2007, played the course in the '60s while still active on the LPGA tour.
On the links-style open design, golfers factor into their shots the frequent lake breezes that can skew a ball’s flight without notice, working into the wind on the north-facing holes and enjoying extra carry riding the current heading back south.
Particularly interesting is Number Seven. Overlooking the water, the hole appears straightforward and easy yet it’s deceptively devilish.
New tees by noted architect Matthews were added in the early 90s. More recently, Doak’s redesign added bunkers, recontoured fairways and resized greens to restore the course to reflect the open links style of its initial era.
Bluegrass fairways and greens of mixed bentgrass surround the remaining stand from the center of the old apple orchard that previously stood on the site, stoic sentinels of the sport for nearly 100 years.
Join us for the Northport Promise Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 30 and experience the artful cunning of links golf in a stunning setting at the Northport Point Golf Club.
